“In the midst of the 2021 lockdown, I decided to mail him some fragments of 'common pottery' from the proto-historic era and posed him the challenge: what do these artifacts, considered 'garbage' by archaeologists, tell us? After months of dialogue about narratives crystallized in archeology, the result was the production of an archeological diary by the artist, which we share in an exclusive way at ArteCapital. Curating art/archaeology: proto and post-excavation processes

“The transdisciplinary practice of art/archaeology has been creating a new relationship between the worlds of archaeology and contemporary art. (…)

In this article the international literature on this emerging theme is analysed, serving as a basis and method to discuss case studies. These case studies refer to examples of Portuguese contemporary artistic creation, namely the work of the artist João Gomes Gago, among others.

NU´VEM RESIDENCY 2022
PASSAGE

On the 20th November 2022, began the residence inserted in the NU’VEM project, in Pico Island, Terra do Pão. Under the organization of FREESAM Production, it lasted for a consecutive month. The proposed project had 4 phases, which are subdivided and complement each other. For its execution, natural elements from Pico Island were essentially used, such as wood found near the seashore and basalt stone, coming from the solidification of very fluid lava.

This international residency programme is organised under the banner of the production company FREESAM. Its main goal is to draw attention to the unique, dramatic, and well-preserved nature of the Azores and make it possible for artists across genres to draw inspiration for their work from the specific atmosphere of Pico Island.

AUTO DEUS

The Colectivo Cristaleira was born between granite walls and giant spiders. João Gomes Gago (1991) and Miguel Jaques (1993) started by chasing the spiders out and by straightening the walls. Then they focused on exploring ritual in drawing, poetry, performance and music. Their pieces have been presented at the Serralves Museum, Monumental Gallery and Évora Museum.
